The Bill Pill

Written by: Raji

The Women’s Reservation Bill has finally been passed. Men and women are born equal they say but are we then succumbing to acceptance of inequitable status of women in society passing over generations? Or has this move begun 13 years ago because of the reality that women have after all been second citizens everywhere? Is it really a victory of sorts or is it something that can only give rise to further misuse by the already existing male power? Can we trust the workings of the Bill to be responsibly executed? There have been reservations made for the backward community in educational institutions to give them the same level of opportunities others have. Surely this bill cannot be talked about on similar lines, or can we? Are we bringing up “special rights” in the name of “equality”? Whats the Bill pill going to cure ?

While I firmly believe that gender should’nt be an excuse for a woman to get where she wants to be, its the only way forward in a country like India where a typical male mindset rules. I think the Bill is a great move, and a big leap forward as it epitomizes the gradual changes in our mindsets. Its a pity that there are folks like Mamata Banerjee and Lalu Yadav who politicize and reduce this landmark to that of religion and further reservations.

We are accomplished, we are capable of doing great deals..and above all, we are one..we are women.

The Bill’s been a long time coming but women have moved forward regardless. And as the popular saying goes, if you want something done, do it yourself, women should continue to push on and not wait around for the Bill to start working.

Well, the Bill in my opinion might serve a purpose of sorts. But what I don’t get is the reservation within a reservation! That’ll only encourage the ‘Mayawatis’ of the world. And who wants that?!
